Bars are at least 5 oz, 3 x 2 x 1″ wrapped in plantable paper embedded with North American wildflower seeds.
Reclaim soap is inspired by private developments in public space where our studio is located in recent years. Spicebush berry and clay for everyday explorations to find your native trail. They tried to bury us, but they didn’t know we were seeds.
Humans are not weeds, although certainly tend towards invasive. This soap is designed to support a daily practice in coexistence without exploitation, we can become naturalized companions to support diversity. For my soap interpretation, I’ve used powdered benzoin gum, which shares the primary botanical name with Lindera Benzoin (Spicebush), and suspended in saponified milk thistle, olive, coconut oils and illipe butter with chelated aloe vera to be gentle yet effective in hard water systems.
A spicebush berry is affixed to the top as decoration which you can also plant in your North American landscape to support the species reclaiming its space, blending into the landscape amongst the invasive plants. The visual cue is a swirling leafy pattern in compost browns, with the aroma of lemony spice and benzoin reminding us of the long-term impact of excess nitrogen going into the ozone because of the invasive presence. This bar is an homage to all the volunteers, advocates and stewards who have contributed thankless hours and often money at their personal expense for the wellness of the taxpaying citizens who are equal stakeholders, heard and unheard – not to be confused with privately funded organizations.
